After Oedipus left the throne, and when his two sons, Eteocles and Polynices , came of age, they agreed to rule Thebes in alternate years. Eteocles , at the end of his first year of rule, reneged on the agreement and refused to step down. Polynices then raised an army of traditional enemies of Thebes and led them against his city. Multiple repercussions may occur to someone who denies their background and race. For example, in The Emperor Jones, the character, Brutus Jones, dissembles as a free white man (Jones was really black and was supposed to be in slavery during that time). Fiddler on the Roof

Fiddler on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof is one of my favoirte plays. I saw the San Jose Civic Light Opera perform it, and it was so funny. I think it was the funniest play I had seen up to that point. After seeing it on the stage, I saw the movie, and it wasn't nearly as good. The movie tends to drag a bit in the middle, but the play didn't drag at all. My favorite section is when Perchik and Hodel fall in love. The characters are: Tevye, the father Golde, the mother Tzietel, the eldest daughter Hodel, the 2nd daughter Chava, the 3rd daughter Shprintze, the 4th daughter Bielke, the youngest daughter Motel, the tailor (and later, Tzietel's husband) Yente, the matchmaker Perchik, a student from Kiev (and later, Hodel's husband) Lazar Walf, the butcher and Tzietel's original betrothed Mordcha Read More

Study Guide for Sophocles' Antigone by Robin Mitchell-Boyask, Associate Professor of Classics, Temple University There is an on-line text with hyperlinks to a wide range of information. As with all web pages, underlined passages indicate hyperlinks to further information. This guide is keyed to the translation by Robert Fagles (Penguin Press). Setting The drama begins at dawn, after a night in which there has been a war in Thebes between armies led by the two sons of Oedipus. Keep in mind that the Greek theater was in the open air, and that the first performances of the day would begin at daybreak. Thu s, imagine that the time of day of the setting would be identical to the performance time. 1-116 As you read the first scene, consider the gravity of the city's condition and how aware Antig Read More

Talkin' Broadway Review: The Green Bird

Votes:0
The Green Bird Theatre Review by Wendy Guida NEW YORK - April 19, 2000 I find it hard to resist a good transformation. I?ve always loved myths which employ them. In one, Philomela becomes a swallow, Procne a nightingale; in another, Zeus changes into a swan for his own cruel purposes. Philosophy is of little protection when one is confronted with such powerful physical reality, when, suddenly, a human is metamorphosed into a bird. But often divine intervention delivers poetic justice that is more satisfying than what we experience in everyday life. Who better, then, to make manifest the magic of The Green Bird than Julie Taymor, whose subconscious clearly lies closer to the surface than the rest of ours. The Green Bird is a fairy tale written by the 18th century Italian playwright Carlo Go Read More

The Mikado

The Mikado (No strings attached...) Mikado photos The Concept Players don't like to make things easy for anyone, least of all the cast, so this production by Janet Holloway was the most difficult in terms of choreographed movements so far. The whole show was based on an evening entertainment in a middle class household of the time, with Mr Gilbert and Mr Sullivan as special guests invited to see the after-dinner puppet show put on by the children of the household. Magically, the puppet show turned into a full-size version of the Mikado, with all the characters being puppets of various kinds, and all worked by strings from above. Naturally, the puppeteers were less than experts, and several puppets were seen to collapse slowly into heaps on the floor as the young operators arms grew tired! Read More
