Cariadoc's Miscellany: Building a Conjecturally Period Pavilion

Votes:0
[This is an article from Cariadoc's Miscellany . The Miscellany is Copyright (c) by David Friedman and Elizabeth Cook, 1988, 1990, 1992. For copying details, see the Miscellany Introduction .] Building a Conjecturally Period Pavilion Some years ago, we decided to try to build a pavilion that would be authentic, reasonably portable, and provide adequate space and shelter for long camping events such as Pennsic. After looking at all of the period pictures of pavilions that we could readily find and failing to find any period descriptions of how they were made, we concluded that the best we could manage would be a conjecturally period pavilion-one consistent with what we knew about period pavilions and period materials. We have so far built three, starting with a half size model, going on to Read More

KISS ASYLUM:Potential Psycho Circus Stage Design

Potential Psycho Circus Stage Design From: KISS Asylum KISS Asylum recently received an artist's rendering of the Psycho Circus stage design. This design is different and more detailed than the version that previously surfaced on the internet. Of course we won't know what the actual/final stage is going to look until it is formally unveiled by the band, but from the looks of this sketch it is going to be awesome and completely blow away the Reunion Tour stage design! Our First King Rene Tent

Our First King Rene Tent New: Custom tent calculations At some point Deborah decided to build her own pavilion based on the many pictures of pavilions in King Rene d'Anjou 's Book of Love . We completed this pavilion as a joint project in 1994, aided by the Calon Scrolls special issue on pavilions. (The Calon Scrolls is the arts-and-sciences newsletter of the Kingdom of Calontir , which has something of a reputation for pavilioning.) The King Rene tents have a "valence", a strip of fabric (usually of a contrasting color, often dagged or fringed -- not just for decoration, but to shed rain better) hanging on the outside of the shoulder. A distinctive feature of the tents in King Rene's book is that the guy ropes and "crow's feet" (the short ropes running diagonally from the shoulder to the Read More

The Noguchi Museum - Dance and Theater Sets

Votes:0
Isamu Noguchi's designs for the stage are an important aspect of what he called "the sculpture of spaces", complementing his landscape projects as another means of making sculpture useful in society. His most well-known works for the stage are the dance sets created for Martha Graham , first in 1935 with Frontier, and most actively in the 1940s. Noguchi designed over twenty sets for Graham, and he also worked with other choreographers, including Erick Hawkins, Merce Cunningham and George Balanchine. In 1955 Noguchi created his only work for the theater, the sets and costumes for the controversial Royal Shakespeare Company production of King Lear , starring John Gielgud. What is a Dramaturg? - The Dramaturgy Pages

Votes:0
What is a Dramaturg? Hmmm... what exactly do you mean by the question? People expect different types of answers in different contexts. But, in this context, why don't I give you a bunch of different answers and we'll see what you can make of it. Besides, one things dramaturgs do is document a process, and this documents the development of my thinking on this question over the past couple of years. Let me know what you think of this. Is this helpful? Any suggestions? A random list of things dramaturgs do by Winston D. Neutel, March 1995. Something I whipped up after being asked a number of times what that funny-looking word meant. A detailed description. by Winston D. Neutel, December 1995. Well, it sort of "goes on," but it describes a lot of things dramaturgs do. A job description. by Cel Read More
