Votes:0 The Civil War popularized photography to a new degree.
Demand for cheap portraits grew enormous as men marched off to war, wishing to leave portraits behind or to take one with them.
Many studios also did a brisk trade supplying images of the scenes and heroes of the war. This mass popularity did not escape the notice of the Treasury Department. Charged with raising as much money as possible for the war, its fledgling Office

Many theories abound about the events of that day, some based in fact others based upon the imaginations of their authors. The simple undisputed fact remains at 0755 Sunday, December 7th 1941, An Imperial Japanese Naval Task force under the command of Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, launched the biggest surprise attack in history. Having sailed undetected from home waters, Nagumo's 6 carriers launched 350 aircraft in two waves that cripples the US Pacific Fleet as it laid at anchor in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. The following pages are a photographic history of that attack, with images taken by the Japanese and US personal during the actual attack. Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 National Check Fraud Center Check Washing What is It? Check washing takes place to the tune of $815 million every year in the U.S. And it is increasing at an alarming rate. Using a process known as check washing, mail snatchers erase the ink on a check with chemicals found in common household cleaning products or on the shelves of your local Walmart and then rewrite the checks to themselves, increasing the amount payable by hundreds and even thousands of dollars. Types of Chemicals Reported Used: Acetone, most widely used, is a highly volatile organic solvent used mainly as a hand-wipe solvent in cleaning applications. It is also a good drying agent for wet parts. But it will erase most inks from a stolen check without any noticeable effect. Reading the remarks on side of a can of Acetone, Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 D ecidedly one of the institutions of our army is the traveling portrait gallery. A camp is hardly pitched before one of the omnipresent artists in collodion and amber bead varnish drives up his two-horse wagon, pitches his canvas gallery, and unpacks his chemicals. Our army here (Fredericksburg.) is now so large that quite a company of these gentlemen have gathered about us. The amount of business they find is remarkable. Their tents are thronged from morning to night, and "while the day lasteth" their golden harvest runs on. Here, for instance near Gen. Burnside's headquarters, are the combined establishments of two brothers from Pennsylvania, who rejoice in the wonderful name Bergstresser. They began with some 200 employees and eight German technicians who were invited in July of 1919 and arrived in January of 1921. They were actually an optical firm and not a camera manufacturer, therefore, their beginnings parallel those of Leitz and Zeiss, who also began as optical manufacturers. They began to produce a vast array of optical products such as microscopes, telescopes, transits, surveying equipment and optical measuring devices for industry and science. Because of the types of products they made they became well known in the scientific and industrial communi Read More Go to Site

Our purpose is neither to embarrass anyone nor prolong the current debates. More than two years ago, the Museum decided that the coinciding of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Nixon resignation and the acquisition of the Nixon-era photographs of Fred J.
