Rarer still is the case of the 'galloping' multiple sclerosis, where the disease moves quickly through the body and causes rapid debilitation. Symptoms of MS vary greatly . Allergies in Children

Allergies in Children E very child care centre usually has at least one child who suffers from allergies. As a result, it is important for caregivers to be aware of children's allergies, know how to avoid substances that trigger allergies and be prepared to manage reactions. Substances found in our everyday lives are not normally harmful (e.g. pollen, peanuts, feathers and animal dander). These substances (called allergens) enter our bodies through breathing, eating, touching or being stung. Once an allergen has entered our bodies, the immune system responds by producing antibodies that attack the allergen. These antibodies remain in the body to protect the person the next time he/she is exposed to the allergen. This is the same way people usually develop life-long protection (i.e. immunit Read More

Food FAQ Return Disclaimer What is food allergy? Food allergy is a specific unwanted response to a particular food. For example, most people could drink a glass of milk or eat an egg without problems, However, In a small number of people their body's immune system responds to that food unfavourably. There are many kinds of reactions to foods. Dr C Motala How common are adverse reactions to food among children, adolescents and adults? Very few prevalence studies have been done. The available studies give an average prevalence of adverse reactions to food of around 12% of the population in all age groups. Adverse reactions to food are of the same magnitude in all age groups, and not a specific problem for infants, which is the common belief today. The prevalence of true food allergy is unkno Read More

Similar to vitamin B6 and magnesium, DMG is safe, relatively inexpensive, and helps about half of autistic children and adults. Research on humans and laboratory animals have shown that DMG strengthens the immune system. The immune system is dysfunctional in many autistic individuals. Some autistic children and adults have seizures, and there are two published reports of decreases in seizure activity as a result of DMG ( New England Journal of Medicine, 1982, 307, 1081-1082; Epilepsia, 1989, 30, 90-93). Corn-derived food ingredients I avoid

Corn-derived food ingredients I avoid The items in the following list share two characteristics. Each of them either is or can be derived from corn, and avoiding each of them seems to reduce my allergic symptoms. Now that I avoid them all, I'm reliably asymptomatic. It's possible that I'm avoiding some of these needlessly, but I'm reluctant to risk days or weeks of blistered hands for minor improvements in the accuracy of this list. There are a few corn-derived ingredients which don't seem to cause me any trouble, probably because processing removes or denatures any recognizable corn proteins. Since your experience might be different, these are listed in the next section . If you're extremely sensitive, see Jenny Connors' much longer list on her Corn Allergens site. As of late October, 2006, Duncan Hines is putting some milk-free cake mixes back on the market! They'll be marked kosher-parve, and some are already appearing in stores. Food Allergy and Intolerance "Seafood does not agree with me; I think I must be allergic to it". But what does it really mean to be sensitive, allergic or intolerant to food? Dr Fiona J Cummings Food allergy Let?s start by looking at food allergy. Food allergy is usually easy to recognise. An allergy to a food gives rise to symptoms very quickly, generally within minutes of eating or even touching the food. The symptoms are often severe, and may even be life-threatening. The kinds of symptoms that might appear include asthma, vomiting, diarrhoea, eczema, urticaria (hives), rhinorrheaa (nasal drip), angio-oedema (swelling of areas of the skin) and in extreme cases, anaphylactic shock (total collapse). Hot Spices Exacerbate Food Allergies

Hot Spices Exacerbate Food Allergies 1:20 p.m. ET (1821 GMT) March 16, 1998 NEW YORK — Hot spices may encourage allergic reactions in those sensitive to certain foods, a study suggests. Some spices, such as paprika, cayenne pepper and chili pepper, interact with the lining of the digestive tract and may increase the chances that allergens can pass from food into the body, according to a report in the Journal of Nutrition. Normally, the cells lining the small intestine (epithelium) bind together in what are called "tight junctions,'' to keep foreign substances out of the bloodstream. An allergic reaction occurs when the foreign substance a person is allergic to passes through such junctions. Erika Jensen-Jarolim and colleagues at University Hospital AKH in Vienna, Austria, tested Read More

How to Survive with Multiple Food Allergies and eventually thrive again

Votes:0
This is what my primary care physician said when I reported that I had been diagnosed with food allergies to about eight or ten basic foods almost 30 years ago. It is the reaction of many family members, friends, and conventional medical professionals to food allergies . They refuse to acknowledge that food allergies are real because they can’t deal with them. People with multiple food allergies may also want to react in the same way. They wishfully think, “Ignore the allergies and they might go away.” It’s hard to wrap your mind around the idea of being unable to eat what seems like all food. However, food allergies (intolerance, sensitivities; click here for more on the semantics of the problem) are very real and usually get worse if left untreated rather than goi Read More

Meniere's Disease and Allergies Update: April 28, 2007 : I have not had a significant onset of symptoms since my last update. When I say significant I mean no symptoms that have debilitated me or altered my life style. I still have tinnitus, stuffy ears, hyperacusis and some mild vertigo. Lately I have been extremely sensitive to changes in the barometric pressure, especially a rapid increase. I get a general feeling of malaise and "headiness". When the pressure levels out then I am fine. I avoid wheat but don't worry much about corn, eggs and yeast. (see article below) My hearing has been stable in my last three visits to the Ear Clinic. Considering my age, 68, that is good. I don't like being in crowds and noisy places. Conversation is very difficult for me in such circumstance Read More

Nutrition Action Healthletter - Food Allergies

April 2001 — U.S. Edition “We have to be hyper-vigilant,” his mother, Mary, told the New York Post last year. “We have to make sure he doesn’t come into contact even with someone who has eaten a peanut butter sandwich.” The Kennedys’ son is one of an estimated seven million Americans who suffer from food allergies. Avoiding contact with peanuts or other foods is the only way to escape the uncomfortable—or in some cases life-threatening—reactions they cause. That’s easier said than done. The most common allergens (allergy-causing proteins) are in thousands of foods. You can’t count on a food’s ingredient list to keep you safe. Some allergens are hidden in “natural flavors,” and others may end up in foods by mistake. In a Read More

Seasoned Cooking November 1999 Issue Coping with Food Allergies by Ronda L. Carnicelli For some people, eating healthy takes a little more effort than it does for the rest of us. People suffering from food allergies must temper their efforts to stay healthy with a keen awareness of what goes into making their food. However, armed with a little information and a watchful eye, people with food allergies can enjoy their food as much as any other person. It just takes someone willing to be vigilant. What are Food Allergies? People frequently use the term "food allergy" to describe a variety of adverse physical reactions to foods. Sulfites Sulfites 1. Q. As the Christmas season and the accompanying Christmas eating approaches, what vegetables are safe to eat? Which food stuffs are sprayed with sulfites which might cause allergic reactions? A. Apparently there is still a great deal of confusion about the use of sulfiting agents in food products. There are six sulfiting agents (sulfur dioxide, sodium and potassium metabisulfite, sodium and potassium bisulfite and sodium sulfite) currently being used to help prevent spoilage and discoloration in foods. These agents have been banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use on fresh fruits and vegetables that are meant to be consumed raw. They also cannot be used in foods considered to be good sources of vitamin B , including fresh meat and poultry products. How Read More
