Clovis/Folsom Transition

The Clovis/Folsom Transition Tony Baker December 1, 2000 H. M. Wormington wrote "the true Folsom (point) appears to be a specialization that developed from the Clovis (point) in the High Plains" ( 1957:30 ). This evolutionary step has been the belief of most archaeologists and collectors since the discovery of the projectiles and the realization that Clovis was older. My father taught me this in the 1960's. When one accepts this evolution, one must also have a mental image of the transition from Clovis to Folsom. Up until about 15 years ago, my image was that the Clovis points grew smaller while the grooves in the base grew longer. This mental image was simple and easy to accept if one didn't think about it too long. However, when I considered all the facts, this simple evolution was not r Read More

Back to the Main Page The Peopling of America: One By Land or Two By Sea? The inception of Beringia is set in the Pleistocene epoch that ranges between 1.6 m BP to 10,000 BP. There were four major glacial advances where humans are proposed in the last glacial epoch circa 14,000 to 10,000 BP. This is not to say there is no support for the possible inlay of humans in the 35,000- Read More

FUTURE DIRECTIONS IN THE ANALYSIS OF FRESHWATER BIVALVES IN ARCHAEOLOGY Evan Peacock, Research School of Archaeology and Archaeological Sciences, Sheffield ABSTRACT The analysis of freshwater bivalves from archaeological contexts has largely been limited to environmental and dietary reconstructions and studies of seasonality. There are several other avenues of research which can be explored. Changes in molluscan fauna through time may reflect anthropogenic alteration of the landscape. Valve representation may provide a means for investigating whether features can be considered primary contexts. Variability in bivalve species representation or size in different intrasite contexts may reflect differential access to desirable foodstuffs in prehistoric societies. Size analysis may provide insi Read More

On July 26, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) concluded that the Spirit Cave remains, claimed under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) by the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe, "cannot reasonably be culturally affiliated with any [Northern Paiute Tribe]." In a September 25 press release, Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt stated, "I believe it is reasonable to determin Read More

Michael A. Arbuthnot ANG 5152 Paleoindian Archaeology Dr. Michael Faught December 15th, 2000 Essay Questions: 1. Summarize your views on the peopling of the New World and the meaning of Clovis, Stemmed point chipped stone assemblages, and Pre-Clovis aged sites now that you know more about the data. Backup your arguments and statements with citations from your readings. Dont forget Dillehay et al. 1992. The subject of the peopling of the New World has become a compelling and fascinating research topic for me. A brief summary of my views follows: I believe there was a limited Pre-Clovis occupation of the New World, by perhaps several groups from several locations (likely all from Asia, but perhaps Australia and/or Southeast Asia too). I think the migrants had low population densities and lim Read More
