Stout, B.S.Ed., M.Ed. Published: November 1998 E-mail to yourself There are three components to handwriting, whether a child is learning to print or write in cursive: correct letter formation, uniform letter size, and uniform slant. Children should focus on one objective at a time-first, correct formation, then size, then slant. Have them work on several, but not all, letters, forming letters and then words. Once assigned letters are formed correctly, emphasize uniform size-lower case letters consistently half the size of upper case letters, but continue to require correct formation. Penmanship by Elaine

long ago, a dedicated home educator asked me for any suggestions that I
might have for a grandson who was experiencing writing difficulties. Here
are the strategies that I suggested. Perhaps they may be of help to someone
else. First, check to see how
your student is holding his pencil. If he is holding it incorrectly, he
may be straining physically to manipulate the pencil and write. I have
worked with children who have done this and a great deal of their manipulation
is in the wrist, not giving them much control. The pencil should be controlled
by the fingertips. Look to see if the thumb is actually on the pencil or
is wrapped . The tip of the thum Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 The Peterson Method Of Instruction Letters are often thought of as pictures to be drawn. Typical
programs with activity workbooks provide space for drawing practice. The
Peterson Method is very different and our materials reflect that difference.
Our books are extremely affordable because they are not used for trace
& copy work. We have always found it to be more valuable for a child
to learn how to see each letter as a sequence of movements. When you teach
a child to see the movement sequence they can also learn - at the same
time - how to use the "fluent" type of movement. We correlate the visual strokes with auditory cues called "Action Words"
to enable rhythm. Our teaching process is simple
and very time-efficient. Lessons are short, physically active and fun.

Votes:0 Good handwriting is a valuable, lifelong skill. It is a courtesy to the person who reads it and a source of pride for the writer. ADVANTAGES OF ITALIC Italic is a distinctive and beautiful style. It is a pleasure to read. It is uncomplicated and simple to learn. It can be written rapidly without loss of legibility. It is ideally suited to meet the needs of today's elementary curriculum. It doesn't require a lot of tedious drills. Italic is relatively simple for students to learn and, consequently, simple for teachers to teach. Students really enjoy Italic. This approach enables the student to acquire both printing skills as well as cursive writing skills - something that is overlooked in many other curricula. The learning sequence is logical and simple. Nothing is ever discarded (as with t Read More Go to Site

Handwritten throughout and lavishly illustrated, a limited supply is still available from the publisher for US$ 3.50 plus postage. “Two weeks,” I said. “You can have legible handwriting in two weeks.” A senior manager and I had been discussing type design. He changed the subject and said: “I’m ashamed of my scribbles. I can barely manage capital letters. One of the things I most want in life is decent handwriting.” I suggested zigzag exercises. Research Request a Brochure Workshops The Way to Write The Left-Handed Child in a Right-Handed World By Clinton Hackney, Ed. D. Language Arts Consultant We live in a right-handed society. Our civilization has been built around a tradition that regards the right hand as preferable to the left. Hand tools, machines, even doors were designed on the basis of this attitude. However, several years ago, Dr. Frank Freeman observed: "The number of left-handed children seems to have increased in recent years. This may be due to relaxed home and school discipline as well as the recommendations of medical authorities that children who show early preference for the left hand s Read More Go to Site
