Votes:0
Welcome! Oak Park, Illinois is home to the world's largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright designed buildings and houses, with 25 structures built between 1889 and 1913. It was in our village that Wright developed and perfected his signature Prairie Style architecture, emphasizing the use of interior light and open spaces in low, earth-hugging buildings. His designs changed the course of 20th century architecture. Many of the Wright houses and buildings in Oak Park and River Forest are registered National Historic Landmarks . We invite you to look at the individual houses and buildings in Oak Park, or take a "walking" Photo Tour of the Wright architecture in Oak Park. Architecture - Emery House

Designed for William T. Emery, Jr. President, Chicago Rawhide Company his is the first independent house design of Walter Burley Griffin. Griffin received the commission as freelance work while he was employed in Frank Lloyd Wright's Oak Park studio. The house contains many elements that Griffin uses repeatedly in his work, such as the large corner piers that seem to hold the weight of the house. Wright was known for his simple use of building materials, but in this house Griffin decided to combine several materials. He chose concrete, brick and stained boards for the exterior. nside, Griffin differs greatly from Wright by breaking up the space vertically. After entering the house under the low ceiling of the foyer, you are surprised by the sudden change to a two-story living room. This gr Read More

("Down" in the Maine sense: in the direction that prevailing winds and currents move a sailing vessel most readily, which is to say more or less northeast.) Brunswick was settled early in the 18th Century, and incorporated as a town in 1739. Around the time of the American Revolution, the major streets and the tree-shaded village green which is still the center of town were laid out. Introduction to Julia Morgan's early Bay Area houses.

Introduction to Julia Morgan's early Bay Area houses After taking and passing the state certification examination in architecture in 1904, Morgan was ready to start her own practice. By 1905 she had opened her first office. (When it was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, she relocated in the Merchant's Exchange Building , the only building designed in the West by Chicago architect Daniel H. Burnham.) Although Morgan devoted much of her professional career to designing domestic architecture, many of her early commissions were for middle-class houses to be built on small suburban lots. With the suburban expansion in the East Bay, she had a ready source for commissions. Typically these houses are understated, unobtrusive elements in the landscape. Several influences converge in these early hou Read More

Waitsfield Village Historic Walking Tour From The history of the Town of Waitsfield, by Rev. Perrin B. Fiske - 1882 "The township owes its name to General Benjamin Wait, the first settler and proprietor of the town. Waitsfield is almost precisely at the geographical center of the state of Vermont, and tradition has it that the commissioners to locate the state capital "struck their stake" (almost precisely) where the village now stands. But General Wait declared "he wouldn't have his meadow cut up" and so he saved the town from that honor." Rev. Fiske's description of 1882 Waitsfield - "white cottages are to be seen on either side of the valley, and about there are plenty of the evidence of thrift and comfort...
