Diagramming Latin Sentences

DIAGRAMMING LATIN SENTENCES, PART I This approach to Latin was inspired by two things: the technique of metaphrasing as presented in Latin for Reading: A Beginner's Textbook with Exercises , by Glenn M. Knudsvig, Gerda M. Seligson, and Ruth S. Craig (rev. ed., University of Michigan Press, 1986); see Latin 231 Assistance Materials for an on-line explanation of the approach the practice of diagramming sentences, which is the way I learned English grammar The Basics of Diagramming Diagramming is a technique for translating Latin sentences to their English equivalents. It is a sort of bridge to help you cross from one language to the other: on one side is a thought expressed according to correct Latin grammar and usage, and on the other is the same thought expressed according to correct Engli Read More

latin.zip contains four files: 'latin.exe' (the executable), 'latin.dat' (data file containing verb information), ' readme ' (instructions) and 'history' (description of features after the initial version). The program is very simple - just type 'latin' at the DOS prompt and you will be tested on conjugation of the five model regular verbs (laudare, monere, ducere, audire and capere), and the five model deponent verbs (horari, fateri, sequi, moliri, pati). 'readme' provides instructions on how you can add more verbs of your own (simply following the format in 'latin.dat'). Mail me any comments, feeback and suggestions - they will be greatly appreciated. Read More

Latin1: The Easy Way

Votes:0
LATIN 1: THE EASY WAY (c) 1999 by C.J. Cherryh I used to teach this subject. I use a method that's a little different than the standard, a method aimed at results, not tradition, and no need to learn grammar at the outset, when you've got enough new things to learn. If you learned by the traditional method you may find this radically different; but trust me. If this is new to you...give it a try. Download this file and work with the pieces and see if you don't think this is easier than legend says it is. Think of Bren Cameron, with more than singular and plural to worry with...and try an alien language. I've found Latin fluency more valuable myself than any other subject I ever studied: vocabulary, logic, world-building, history, culture, reasoning and general knowledge. I can read scienti Read More

Study Guides The PDF files shown below can be printed from any computer, provided you have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader . You do not need the Flavius font family to run these files; the fonts are embedded. The files can be printed to any letter-size paper, but some are designed to be printed onto business card stock, which can be obtained in bulk from office supply stores or in individual sheets from copy stores such as Kinko’s. There are ten “lessons” per page, and when you print to business card stock, each “lesson” will print on its own card. (The business card format used was Avery 5371; other brands may not fit this format.) Nota bene: When you print from the Adobe Acrobat Reader, be sure to uncheck “Fit to page” in the printing options/properties. Read More

Lingua Latina FIRST OF ALL LET ME APOLOGIZE TO ANYONE WHO HAS TRIED TO CONTACT ME ABOUT LINGUA LATINA. I STOPPED SUPPORTING IT A FEW YEARS BACK AND SHOULD HAVE SAID SO. I've wanted to undertake a full overhaul of the program for some time and got stuck in the middle of it. However, I've been playing around with the code again and hope to offer a version that will run on XP in the somewhat near future. Lingua Latina is a free program which drills users on the basics of Latin grammar. It runs on Windows 95/98/NT (but not yet XP). Unfortunately, there is no Mac or Linux version of Lingua Latina. Lingua Latina , at its best, helps users memorize the key forms and endings, but it would be very difficult to learn Latin with this program alone. You'd know lots of endings, but very little about wh Read More

legal latin how many words and phrases do you know? Latin judgments A writ by any other name... AB INITIO it should be said that there is a good prima facie case for the decision of Lord Irvine, the Lord High Chancellor, to simplify the language used in court as part of the civil law reforms which bear the imprimatur of the Master of the Rolls, Lord Woolf. From April 26[1999] Lord Irvine wants lawyers, pro bono publico , to be much more straightforward in the way they speak pendente lite . Out will go, inter alia , hearings in camera or ex parte . In will come hearings in private or without notice. Plaintiffs will be replaced by claimants. Newspaper editors will no longer live in terror of writs. Instead they will tremble at claim forms. The Romance Languages - Latin

Return to the Romance Languages page. LATIN: the father of the Romance languages BASIC INFORMATION Every great Western society sees itself as better for having held on to inherited Roman traditions. As well as having served as the language of an empire that once ruled over a fourth of the world's population, today, the variant named Church or Ecclesiastical Latin is the official language of the Vatican, and language instructors the world over hold onto it as though it were still very much alive. Its vocabulary has been borrowed into every major European language, and its roots are the basis of scientific and technological vocabulary. One noticeable characteristic of Latin is the heavier reliance on inflections to convey the meaning and use of a word than seen in its daughter languages. PRO Read More

Web Spanish Lessons, by Tyler Jones

Web Spanish Lessons by Tyler Jones and Jennifer Chambers Introduction My name is Tyler Chambers, and I have prepared these Spanish lessons to teach basic knowledge, grammar, and vocabulary for Mexican Spanish. I am not a native speaker of Spanish, so any mistakes in these lessons are my own. The lessons are provided in Web-browsable format for use with graphical World Wide Web browsers such as Netscape or Mosaic. Text-based browsers such as Lynx don't display the Spanish characters, so use an image-based browser if you can. Each lesson is loosely organized around a central theme. New words, sample sentences, pronunciation guides, grammar explanations, and self-tests are included in most of the lessons. In addition, each lesson contains audio of that lesson's new words being spoken (by me) Read More
