Geography - Merriam-Webster's Atlas

--> Iowa At the beginning of the 20th century, many U.S. states adopted their first official flags. As various chapters had done in a number of other states, the Daughters of the American Revolution took an active role in creating a state flag for Iowa. The organization recommended a white banner bearing a flying bald eagle and a ribbon emblazoned with the state motto ("Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain"), with the name of the state below. The War Council of Iowa, set up to coordinate state involvement in World War I, approved this flag. Examples were sent with Iowa troops to Europe, but official recognition by the state legislature was delayed. A Civil War veterans' organization, the Grand Army of the Republic, was opposed to any state flag. The veterans felt that the Read More

--> --> USA > Iowa Online Highways United States Iowa Iowa Once wide-open prairie land, with rippling, tall grasses covering rounded hilltops and gently sloping valleys, today Iowa is 70% cropland. Corn is the state's signature product -- what Iowa is to wheat, Iowa is to corn. Iowa ranks second among all US states in farm income, trailing only California . Tucked in between the cornfields, in the 30% of the state not dedicated to agricultural production, are abundant cultural and historical charms. Iowa's quaint covered bridges, made famous by Robert James Waller's best-selling novel The Bridges of Madison County, convey even more rustic romance in person than they do in the book. The bluffs over the Mississippi River in Dubuque are dotted with an array of colorfully painted Victorian Read More

Iowa General Assembly - Iowa State Synbols

Iowa State Symbols One of the initial acts of the first Iowa Legislature in 1847 was to create the Great Seal of Iowa. The two-inch diameter seal pictures a citizen soldier standing in a wheat field, surrounded by farming and industrial tools, with the Mississippi River in the background. An eagle is overhead, holding in its beak a scroll bearing the state motto, "Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain." The motto was the work of a three-man Senate committee and was incorporated into the design of the seal at their suggestion. The Great Seal cannot be used without the permission of the Governor. The state seal is retained in the custody of and under the control of the Governor, who uses the seal for official documents and functions. Iowa was almost 75 years old before the Read More
