The number of patents issued increased dramatically during the 19th century, stimulated by the American industrial revolution and further fueling it. The middle and late 19th century was a golden age for American invention. The technology envisioned by American inventors has improved our standard of living and linked us across physical and cultural divides. Education Center Activity: Inventors' Club

Inventors' Club Science/Art Activity In this activity, children will discuss how machines help people do things. Then they will “invent” machines that can help them do something they need help doing. What You Need large construction paper pictures of different machines at work (optional) crayons, colored pencils, or magic markers What to Do Discuss with children how different machines help people do things. For example, airplanes help people fly to different places and trucks help people carry heavy things from place to place. Point out that machines often help people do things that they could not do, or would have trouble doing, by themselves. Then ask children what kinds of things they can't do (or have trouble doing) on their own. List their responses on chart paper. Read More

First Flight

Votes:0
The Wright Brothers Controlled, powered flight had seemed impossible until Orville Wright took off on the 17th December 1903. The key to the Wright Brother's success was that their engineering had gone beyond the trial and error methods of their contemporaries. Having only very limited resources they showed great scientific ingenuity. When their test flights did not produce as much lift as they had expected, they went back to first principles and carried out a series of scientific experiments , starting with the bicycle balance and moving on to their famous wind tunnel experiments. They were the first to understand how the lift from the aerofoil changes in flight, and the first to design their propellers as a form of aerofoil. simulations The Wright Brothers designed the 1903 Flyer to prot Read More

History

Mathematics started with counting. In about the 2000 BC’s, the Babylonians developed some mathematical ideas. Number problems like the Pythagorean triples (discovered by Pythagoras and the Pythagoreans, his students) were studied from 1700 BC. Linear equations were studied to solve problems, as well as quadratic equations. These led to a kind of numerical algebra. The Greeks studied similar figures, volume and area (geometry problems). Values were also determined for p . The Babylonian’s mathematics passed on to the Greeks. From 450 BC on the Greeks studied and improved many kinds of mathematics. The ancient Greeks discovered conic sections (circular shapes formed when cutting a cone at different angles). They also made many discoveries in astronomy and trigonometry. While the Gr Read More

Innovative Inventions

Innovative Inventions Inventions brought on the most drastic changes during both Industrial Revolutions. Machines made life easier and decreased prices and generally improved life. Before the 1750's life was very primitive but simple, which might have been better than sophisticated and complicated. The first Industrial Revolution mainly was based upon the cotton industry, subsequently, most of the inventions made during that period were mainly for manufacturing and producing cotton. John Kay, an English weaver met the high demand for cotton products by introducing his flying shuttle, an invention that could cut cotton twice as fast. The scene was now set for many other inventors to revolutionize the cotton industry. Another problem arose. Yarn was not being fed fast enough to the weaver, b Read More

INVENTORS IN ELECTRICITY

Votes:0
Inventors History has brought about many inventors, some greater than others. It is these people that have made electricity such a big part of our lives. All of the inventors associated with electricity are responsible for inventing all of our many electrical appliances and for establishing the principles and laws of electricity. Some of the names of inventors are recognized by everybody, such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison . Yet, very few people have ever heard of inventors such as Michael Faraday , and others like him that have done things just as great. Even though many of the historic inventors are long dead, their inventions are still being used today. For example, Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone has become a marvelous invention in today's society. Many othe Read More

The American Experience | The Telephone | Special Feature

--> Special Feature: Forgotten Inventors Can Opener , 1858 British merchant Peter Durand made a huge stride in food preservation with his 1810 invention of the can. Canned rations provided to soldiers and explorers saved legions from sure starvation. So grateful for its inner contents were the hungry recipients that no one really complained about the sweat and toil often required to simply open the can. In 1858 Ezra J. Warner of Waterbury, Connecticut, patented the first can opener. An intimidating combination of bayonet and sickle, Warner's invention was nonetheless eagerly adopted by the U.S. military during the Civil War. Household use of the can opener increased when William W. Lyman's more user-friendly model was introduced in 1870. No longer did opening a can of peaches mean risking Read More

The New Zealand Edge : Heroes : www.nzedge.com

Numerically, New Zealanders are among the rarest group of people in the world. Historically, we've blown that away with world-changing ideas. These people who have THE NEW ZEALAND EDGE are our sources of inspiration for international achievement. We have many stories to tell over the next few years of this project, here is the first group of our greatest achievers from The Edge. Sydney Smith THE SCIENTIFIC DETECTIVE In a media age populated with forensic crime thrillers such as CSI, Roxburgh's Sir Sydney Smith (1883-1969) was the original. A forensics pioneer, he achieved world renown through the application of science to justice. From the edge of an Otago goldfield to the telling edge of a murder weapon, Smith learnt to read the stories of dead men - and in doing so changed the way crime Read More

The Pioneers of Electronic and Mechanical Television

Nipkow | Jenkins | Baird | DuMont | Farnsworth | Sarnoff | Zworykin Paul Nipkow (1860 - 1940) One of the earliest proposals for a mechanical television system was put forward by German researcher Paul Nipkow in 1883. When he developed patent No. 30,105, he was an unknown twenty-three-year-old student living in Berlin. It proved to be the basis for most early television schemes in the world, although he never built the apparatus. In Nipkow's patent, which he called an 'electric telescope', a disc was punched with holes in a spiral near the outer edge. When the disc revolved, each hole vertically scanned a line of the image, allowing variations in light to reach a selenium cell. As one hole swept over a segment of the picture, the next in sequence tackled the portion next to it, until the co Read More

Women Inventors

Time Warp -- On Science -- On Health -- On Defense -- Artcam Women Inventors ( ca 1900 ) The article on woman inventors below is part of a patent manual written by Fred Dieterich in 1899. The interesting point here is not that it is surprising to see a piece written today about women inventors, but that when the article below was written it was 1899 and women didn't yet have the "right" to vote. We will be supplying a bibliography on women and invention shortly, so check back soon. Women as Inventors That woman is rapidly coming to the front as an inventor is evidenced by the large increase in the number of applications being filed by them. It is an erroneous impression that women invent improvements on articles especially adapted and intended for their sex, for the reason that they are co Read More
