Among The Creeks

A STUDY of THE PEOPLES of the CREEK TRIBES of SOUTHEASTERN AMERICA & of THOSE WHO LIVED AMONGST THEM The Muscogees - we call them Creeks to identify them from other Native groups of the area -- the Southeastern United States -- the Cherokee , Chickasaw , and Choctaw -- were really a group of tribes. Kashitas , Koasati , Yammassee , Tuckabatchee , Coosa , Coweta , Alibamo are some tribes associated with Creeks . They mainly lived along waterways of (now) Alabama and Georgia , in villages connected by paths-- trading paths . And threaded among the trading paths were hunting paths . Crisscrossing the trading and hunting paths were war paths . A telling pattern. Much information is available on the Creeks as a people and as tribes. I seek to look at the individuals they were. And at the famili Read More

Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory (Oklahoma)

Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory O Si Yo! In order to know who your ancestors were you must start withyourself, from the present to the past, building a solid case based on primaryand excellent secondary sources. Family legends or traditions are wonderful tools, but not facts. If your family story says your great great grandmother born in 1850 was a Cherokee Princess who walked the Trail of Tears; then you must decide if you want to believe your family story ... or the thousands of history books that say the "Trail" took place more than 10 years before her birth (1838/1839) and that there were no princesses in the Cherokee Tribe. Lets get started . Prentiss Owens Obituary Various sources used to gather information for this site including but notlimited to: Access Genealogy Chero Read More

FrancoGene: Genealogy of Quebec's Native People and francophone Metis This page covers both Quebec's Native People as well as the non-Quebec Metis usually found in regions where the French-speaking were numerous. Supplementary references on this suject are welcome. Important: There are very few reference books on the genealogy of Amerindians, but we find many books about their history. Names used to designate Natives, other than the name of their tribe or nation, include : Savage (a pejorative, rarely used today but common only a half-century ago), Indian, North American Indian, Native, and Amerindian (this one seems to be used only in French). In French, the corresponding terms are: Sauvage, Indien, Indien nord-amÉricain, Autochtone and AmÉrindien. Metis means mixed blood, that is initial Read More

Nation of the Kaw

The Kansas/Kanza/Kaw Nation Oklahoma Territory Kaw Bark Hut ca. 1880 The Kansa/Kaw Tribe, also known as "the wind people" The tribe originally lived along the lower Kansas River in villages consisting of conical-shaped lodges. The Kaw Tribe, formerly known as the Kansa (or Konza) at one time stretched over 20 million acres across northern Kansas into Nebraska and Missouri. In 1825, a treaty was signed by the Kanza Tribe in which the Tribe "agreed" to sell a large portion of its land base and relocated to a reservation near present day Topeka, Kansas. The Kansa lived a semi-nomadic life, depending primarily on buffalo hunting and some farming for their food. They obtained social prestige and honor only in combat, and their chiefs were chosen for bravery and wisdom. The culture of the Kansa Read More

Main >> Cultures & Beliefs >> Native American Native Am. Research in Mich. NATIVE AMERICAN RESEARCH IN MICHIGAN INTRODUCTION Using the Ottawa, Chippewa and Potawatomi tribes as examples Before the arrival of the first white man, Michigan was inhabited by 15,000 Indians, members of the Miami, Chippewa, Menominee, Ottawa, Potawatomi and Wyandot tribes. Today the number is considerably less. While it is often difficult to trace Native ancestry it is not impossible. When doing Native American research proceed as you would any other research - backwards, from yourself to your parents to their parents, etc. and from death to marriage to birth. While the lessons below are numbered one to ten, you may read them in any order. Proceed at your own pace, there are no assignments other than to apply wh Read More

People of the Three Fires Native Genealogy

"People of the Three Fires": There are three major tribal groups in Michigan today: the Chippewa (Ojibwe), the Ottawa, and the Potawatomi. They comprise what is called the Three Fires Council. Although these three tribes have similar cultures and share the same territory, there are still some differences. Ottawa are found in the northern reaches of the Great Lakes; in michigan they occupy the western half of the Lower Peninsula. The Ottawa people were seasonal wanderers of the land and sailors of the Great Lakes gathering wild rice, netting fish, trapping both large and small game, and hunting large game such as moose, deer, and caribou. Ottawa people continue to be great traders and craftsmen. One hallmark of Ottawa life is the birch bark canoe. When the French came, the Ottawa Read More

We hope to be adding other rolls as well in the future. Please take the time to compare both rolls. The Siler census is what the Chapman roll was based on then Guion Miller used the Chapman to include those of East of the Mississippi in his 1906 payment to all the Cherokees The Chapman Rolls by Jerry Wright Jordan (updated link 21 January 1999) You will note there are some differences if you can not find a name excepted on the Churchill on the Siler it can be found in the accepted and rejected Read More
