To describe these complex systems, we develop models and techniques drawn from nonlinear dynamics and chaos, neural nets, cellular automata, artificial life, and genetic algorithms. Each year CCSR organizes and hosts the conference Understanding Complex Systems . The Center for Complex Systems Research has a rich history. The software was originally written in 1992 and released as open source, aka free software. Since then it has developed a lot. It has been incorporated into many graphics programs and ported to most operating systems. The shape of each image is specified by a long string of numbers - a genetic code of sorts. You can create your own flames with the Apophysis interactive designer (for windows), Qosmic (for Linux), or Oxidizer (for Mac OS X). Fractal Pages of Paul N. Lee

Fractal Pages frac?tal (fr?k?t?l) n. A geometric pattern that is repeated at ever smaller scales to produce irregular shapes and surfaces that cannot be represented by classical geometry. Fractals are used especially in computer modeling of irregular patterns and structures in nature. [French, from Latin fractus , past participle of frangere , to break. See FRACTION.] Fractals are extensions of traditional Euclidean shapes, such as lines, squares, and circles, with two fundamental properties. First, when you view fractals, you can magnify them an infinite number of times, and they contain structure at every magnification level. Second, you can generate fractals using finite and typically small sets of instructions and data. Fractals grew out of the goal of mathematicians to completely desc Read More

Home Software Talks Articles Fractals IFS fractals Mandelbrot Orbit Fractals Photos Diary Java Fractals This site contains some fractals I have written, implemented through Java Applets. The Mandelbrot Set fractal applet is not complete, so it doesn't include documentation or source code. If you do not have a browser that supports Java (not just JavaScript like Netscape for Windows 3.1), I advise you to get one (such as HotJava or Netscape 2 or 3 for Win95/WinNT/Unix/Mac) or go to a site which has the fractals in GIF or JPEG files. If your browser does support Java, then you will see that the applets are loaded much faster than equal size GIF images. Update - As well as the new look, I have removed the old mandel0 applet, since it has been superceded by the Classic Mandelbrot/Julia Set app Read More

Russian Idicated to Ihab Abdel Latif, a friend who always held the candle right Video feedback is a simple way to produce hypnotizing video effects at home, with minimal costs. You will need a TV set, a video camera and a cord. Plug VIDEO OUT on the camera into VIDEO IN on the TV set. Point the camera at the TV screen to create a loop (feedback). It is as simple as that! Bring the TV set brightness way down, contrast high. Zoom the camera in so that the *image* of the screen shown on the TV set is about the same size as the screen itself (in other words, aspect ratio close to 1:1). Rotations of the camera about the viewing axis are desirable, else you just get a blob that is hard to stabilize. It is very good to have a tripode. Turn off all the automatic features on the TV and camera. Try Read More

Security issues could be discussed and analyzed in global framework of two strategic players. There were clear goals and roles for the players. Today with the role of strategic nuclear weapons greatly reduced we have regional crises which have some similarities with pre WW-I situations with one mayor difference: Today's world is much more connected, especially information- Read More

Quaternionic fractals

Quaternionic fractals Produced by Andy Burbanks Quaternionic numbers may be represented by points in four-dimensional space. A separate Introduction to quaternions shows how they may be introduced as an extension of the complex numbers. Quaternionic Fractals are fractals in four-dimensional space. By taking three-dimensional slices through these objects, it is possible to visualise them. Shown here are some example pictures, the resolution is 512 x 512 x 512. The left-hand set is a slice through a quaternionic Julia set (for q = -0.1 + 0.6i + 0.1j - 0.6k). The right-hand set is a slice through the so-called Quandelset . In order to calculate the shape of a slice, the usual method would be to take a grid of points in 3D and test each one to see if it lies inside or outside the object. Unfor Read More

Review of Literature on Chaos, Fractals, and Non-Linear Dynamics

Steve Lee's Review of Literature on Chaos, Fractals, and Non-Linear Dynamics Chaos: Making a New Science , by James Gleick , Penguin Books, 1988 (paperback) Needless to say, James Gleick's Chaos is the best introduction to the subject. Edward Lorenz (one of the founders of Chaos) -- among others -- have credited this book with making Chaos such a widely studied field of science among both layman and professionals. You must read this book to understand Chaos. The Essence of Chaos , by Edward Lorenz, Univ. of Wash. Press, 1993 (paperback) Edward Lorenz, for those who are not familiar with Chaos, is one of the founding fathers of the field. His book, The Essence of Chaos, is meant to be an introductory look at a field which he helped to start. Overall, I felt it was good. He said some interes Read More

Nature is filled with fractals as seen in such objects as mountains, shorelines, trees (branches, barks and roots), ferns, fluid flow patterns, cloud formations (with or without lightning), blood vessels and mycelium strands. Spanky Welcome

THE SPANKY FRACTAL DATABASE The Elastic Fractal Welcome to the Spanky Fractal Database This is a collection of fractals and fractal related material for free distribution on the net. Most of the software was gathered from various ftp sites on the internet and it is generally freeware or shareware. Please abide by the guidelines set down in the individual packages. I would also like to make a disclaimer here. This page points to an enormous amount of information and no single person has the time to thoroughly check it all. I have tested software when I had the resources, and read through papers when I had the time, but other than certifying that it is related to fractals I can't assume any other responsibility. Thanks to everyone who has contacted me, pointing out new and interesting fracta Read More

Sprott . The figure above is today's fractal displayed in low (320 x 200) resolution. Click on it or on any of the cases below to see them at higher (640 x 480) resolution with a code that identifies them according to a scheme described in the book. Older Fractals of the Day are saved in an archive , which you can access. If your browser supports Java, you might enjoy the applet that creates a new fractal image every five seconds or so. Strange Attractor Search

Strange Attractor Search Your browser doesn't support Java. If your browser supports Java, you will see above an endless succession of fractal images produced by the iterated map xnew = a + bx + cx 2 + dxy + ey + fy 2 , ynew = x , znew = y , with a through f chosen randomly over the range -3 to 3. Only those cases that are bounded and exhibit sensitive dependence on initial conditions (chaos) are exhibited. The other 99.7% are discarded. Each iterate is plotted at ( x , y ) in a hue proportional to z . Like snowflakes, these strange attractors come in infinite variety with no two the same. Each one you see is new and almost certainly has never been seen before. The technique is described in detail in the book Strange Attractors: Creating Patterns in Chaos by J. C. Sprott . Turbulent Landscapes: The natural forces that shapeour world

Votes:0
Welcome to the Exploratorium's Complexity Web Site. These pages are an online resource intended to accompany the recent Turbulent Landscapes exhibit. Turbulent Landscapes is the result of 13 artists' explorations of complexity in nature. The exhibit will travel to museums and science centers in upcoming months. This site attempts to place the idea of complexity in nature into a broader scientific context, and to provide newcomers to the field with an introduction to the concepts and theories that contribute to contemporary complexity research.
