Fractal Tune Smithy home page How the program turns your numbers into a tune Scales of interest to musicians Robert's home page (Key of A - sharps are in dark blue) Here is what one sounds like , Midi version , Sound clips , Web ring , Stats What's a Fractal Tune? There are many types of fractal, and one type consists of a triangle, with several smaller triangles added to each of its sides, and yet smaller triangles attached to each of those, and so on. The background of this page shows what it's like. It's called the Koch snowflake. So why not use musical notes, adding smaller notes within each one, and smaller ones within those, and so on. Or, easier in music, go the other way, and start with a small pattern and build it up to larger and larger structures. Fractal Tune Smithy does this f Read More

MIDI PIECE - 'Fractal Window I'

MIDI Piece - 'Fractal Window I' This piece was created and copyrighted © 1996 by Forrest Fang using Robert Greenhouse's program, The Well-Tempered Fractal , which is available from the Fractal Music Project website. The program generates MIDI data from different types of fractals, according to certain parameters that the user sets. The one here is based on the Duffing attractor: Several different runs of the program were 'assembled' on a commercial sequencer, and their data were slightly randomized by Mr. Fang according to whim. He then transposed the different voices into octaves that seemed to aurally complement each other. Despite all of the technical aspects involved in creating the data, the piece was generated intuitively. The piece is designed to play in the background for those bro Read More

The Music of JosÉ Oscar Marques The Strange Beauty of Fractal Music Fractals are abstract mathematical objects which, as such, cannot be seen or heard, but their structure can be used to model computer generation of images that may be visually very attractive. Fractal images have been popular for more than a decade, but I think we are just scratching the surface of the possibilities of fractal music. The compositions on this page aim to explore some of these possibilities, showing that recursive algorithms can be employed to create music of the same strange beauty as the richly decorated fractal picture at the side .
