Irv grew up in the central part of the city and attended Maywood Elementary and Hammond High School. He was named the Hammond Times Athlete of the year in 1957, where he played football, basketball, baseball and track for the Wildcats. Upon his graduation from high school he went on to attend Northwestern University. In 1961 Irv was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, in the seventh round of the NFL draft.
