1492 -- Christopher Columbus

1492 -- Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus Man and Myth After five centuries, Columbus remains a mysterious and controversial figure who has been variously described as one of the greatest mariners in history, a visionary genius, a mystic, a national hero, a failed administrator, a naive entrepreneur, and a ruthless and greedy imperialist. Columbus's enterprise to find a westward route to Asia grew out of the practical experience of a long and varied maritime career, as well as out of his considerable reading in geographical and theological literature. He settled for a time in Portugal, where he tried unsuccessfully to enlist support for his project, before moving to Spain. After many difficulties, through a combination of good luck and persuasiveness, he gained the support of the C Read More

Beagle , under Captain Fitz Roy, circumnavigated the globe in 1831-1836. Aboard the ship as naturalist was Charles Darwin, then a young man in his mid- to late twenties. During this voyage, Darwin began to formulate the theories later published in his landmark study of evolution, The Origin of Species (1859). One of the Beagle's most important stops was at Tierra del Fuego, where Captain Fitz Roy was returning to their homeland three natives of the Yahgan tribe he had taken to England a few years previously: a boy named Jemmy Button, a girl named Fuegia Basket, and a man named York Minster. Columbus in American History

Votes:0
"We arouse and arrange our memories to suit our psychic needs." -- Michael Kammen America's national memory is filled with icons and symbols, avatars of deeply held, yet imperfectly understood, beliefs. The role of history in the iconography of the United States is pervasive, yet the facts behind the fiction are somehow lost in an amorphous haze of patriotism and perceived national identity. Christopher Columbus, as a hero and symbol of the first order in America, is an important figure in this pantheon of American myth. His status, not unlike most American icons, is representative not of his own accomplishments, but the self-perception of the society which raised him to his pedestal in the American gallery of heroism. This gallery was not in place at the birth of the political nation. Ame Read More

Sir Frances Drake Sir Frances Drake gathered together his own band of adventurers and made three profitable voyages to the New World, plundering Spanish settlements and destroying Spanish ships. In 1572 he made a daring march across the Isthmus of Panama. From a high tree he caught his first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean. Sir Frances Drake's great voyage around the world, between 1577 and 1580, was secretly financed by Queen Elizabeth I and the war party in her council. Drake set out sailing with five ships. He intended to pass through the Strait of Magellan, at the southern tip of South America, and then explore the waters he had seen from the Isthmus of Panama. We're Hitting the Trail! The Donner Party website is moving to DonnerPartyDiary.com . Update your Favorites or Bookmarks. Thank you. The Donner Party by Daniel M. Rosen In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Donner Party, I created a daily diary of the Donner Party's journey. The daily information includes diary entries and quotes from original sources and histories. Now that the anniversary is over, I will keep the diary on the web for your research, education and enjoyment. The Donner Party was the most famous tragedy in the history of the westward migration . Almost ninety wagon train emigrants were unable to cross the Sierra Nevada before winter, and almost one-half starved to death. Perhaps because they were ordinary people -- farmers, merchants, parents, children -- their story cap Read More

The Frederick A. Cook Society

"If some insist that history must be served, let them remember that the more we come to understand the physical geography of the Arctic Ocean, the more we recognize the phenomena described by Cook but unknown at the time of his journey." Dr. Walter A. Wood, President of the American Geographical Society (1963) "There is no ground to question the validity of Dr. Cook's assertion that he reached the North Pole." Dr. V.S. Koryakin Polar historian of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1993) "Frederick Cook remains as one of the most perceptive as well as the most vilified of polar explorers...Cook had made a discovery that no amount of humiliation could take from him and one that only the most fortunate and observant of arctic explorers ever learned." Another Pole, Antoni Dobrowolski, also participated in this expedition which lasted from 1897 to 1899 and became the first to winter in the Antarctic. Scientific work providing much valuable data in many disciplines was carried out as the trapped vessel drifted in the sea-ice. In addition to observations of sea-ice formation and types of ice-bergs, Arctowski obtained a full year's cycle of meteorological observations. As oceanographer he Read More

The Voyage of Brendan the Navigator

Votes:0
St Brendan's Isle Or: Who Really Discovered America? Maps of Columbus’s time often included an island called St. Brendan’s Isle that was placed in the western Atlantic ocean. Map makers of the time had no idea of it’s exact position but did believe it existed some where west of Europe. It was mentioned in a Latin text dating from the ninth century titled Navigatio Santi Brendani Abatis (Voyage of Saint Brendan the Abbot). It described the voyage as having taken place in the sixth century. Several copies of this text have survived in monasteries throughout Europe. It was an important part of folklore in medieval Europe and may have influenced Columbus. Historians relate that Brendan was born about 484 A.D. near Tralee in County Kerry. He was ordained by Bishop Erc and sailed Read More

TURN BACK TIME .... TO THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY AND THE STORY OF ESTEVANICO Index page from Bennie J. McRae, Jr.'s LEST WE FORGET Web Site He was an equal partner in a group of four men that changed the map of the world. Few individuals can make such a claim. He was the first non-Indian to see the present state of Arizona. He blazed the trail that the Coronado expedition would follow later. He did much to allay the unrest of the Indians of Nueva Galicia simply because he was trusted and respected by them. He walked well over five thousand miles in exploring the southern parts of our country. He has been neglected too long. -- Marshall C. William H. Ashley's 1825 Rocky Mountain Papers William H. Ashley's 1825 Rocky Mountain Papers Introduction William H. Ashley, with his partner Andrew Henry, owned a fur trading company based in Saint Louis, Missouri. Prior to the period covered by these papers, he had lost a fortune in an ill-fated attempt to establish a trapping business on the upper Missouri river. His new plan was trap the region to the south, just over the divide. The previous year, an Ashley-Henry party led by Jedediah Smith had crossed the continental divide at what came to be known as South Pass and found the valley of the Green river to be rich with beaver. Consequently, the remainder of Ashley's fur company left St. Louis and made their way up the Platte. Ashley left two documents describing the events of 1825: On Read More
