Ancient Scotland tour - Travelling through prehistory

Votes:0
From the end of May to the end of July, 1998, we made a tour of more than 200 Scottish prehistoric sites. This work was in coordination with SCRAN ( Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network, a Millennium Project to digitise Scotland's human history and material culture), with the intention of producing an educational website and a CD-ROM about the stone monuments of Scotland. On this website you may find an online travel diary , which was updated in real time. Armed with hi-tech equipment , we have tried to link to computers around the world, and have let you follow the tour, interact with archaeologists and experts, view images from the journey, and learn about the ancient Scottish people and monuments. Have a look at our eight-week diary, searching for clues to the builders of the impr Read More

Recent Archaeological Research in Lewis Department of Archaeology, University of Edinburgh by Simon Gilmour 1 The University of Edinburgh Department of Archaeology has a very long standing interest in the archaeology of the Scottish Islands. In 1931 the first Abercromby Professor, Vere Gordon Childe, directed excavations at the Neolithic village of Skara Brae in Orkney. Over the last ten years, since 1985, research has focused on the Isle of Lewis although related projects have also been undertaken on North Uist, Skye, Mull, Ulva, Coll and Islay. Work has continued successfully on Lewis since 1993 with various wide ranging projects incorporating all aspects of the departmental research program. After a 4 year hiatus since 1989, punctuated by small scale rescue excavations undertaken by the Read More

The pits of the enclosure showed up to three phases of use with deposits containing Carinated Bowl-type pottery in the later phases. Medieval or post-medieval rig and furrow overlay the site. The project was funded by Historic Scotland . The following is an edited extract from the final report. The report has been submitted to the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and should be publis Read More

EXCAVATIONS AT DUFFUS CASTLE

Excavations at Duffus Castle, Moray John Cannel & Christopher Tabraham ABSTRACT In 1984 and 1985, limited excavations were carried out in the north-east corner of the bailey, before and after emergency works to stabilize a leaning portion of curtain wall. The excavations, though small in scale, produced clear evidence .for a primary occupation in the 12th century, and for a substantial masonry-building phase in the 14th and 15th centuries, thus going some way to confirming the evidence, from architectural and documentary sources. The excavations were funded by Historic Scotland. INTRODUCTION Duffus Castle passed into State care in 1926 and immediately thereafter major consolidation works were carried out on the upstanding masonry, including the stretches of curtain Wall encircling the bail Read More
