EXCAVATION AT BALLYNAHATTY 5, BALLYNAHATTY TOWNLAND, COUNTY DOWN, 1999 A Preliminary Report Mr B. Hartwell Introduction Since 1990 there have been seven seasons of excavation on this extensive site, all generously supported by the Environment and Heritage Service of the DOE NI. By 1997, the last season, the inner enclosure complex (BNH6), a portion of the outer enclosure (BNH5), and the northern section of the Annexe attached to the BNH5 had been excavated (Fig.1.1) . Five cremation burials with passage grave affinities were found in the entrance area. The entrance to the Annexe, and therefore to the main enclosure BNH5, was found at a point halfway down the eastern side. This showed as a simple gap, 2m across, but with a more complex setting of posts within it. A series of E-W postholes s Read More

Dunamase

Dunamase This is an archaeology website dedicated primarily to the medieval castle of Dunamase in County Laois, Ireland, but I will add information about other archaeological sites in which I have been involved. It contains the complete text of a report on work at Nenagh Castle. If you go to the very end and scroll backwards you will see that I put short summaries of all the work I am involved in and update it regularly. I would be grateful if anyone who knows of any references to Dunamase that were written in the 17th century, or describe the rebuild in the 18th century, could email them to me at bjhodkinson@eircom.net . Many of the later histories describe in detail events in the 1640's and 50's but I can find no contemporary references to these events. Contents: NB. for regular visitors Read More

Newgrange Books from Amazon.com Amazon.co.uk Home Page Winter solstice sun illuminates the mound at Newgrange. The Megalithic Passage Tombs of Newgrange , Knowth , Dowth , Fourknocks , Loughcrew and Tara are located in the present day County of Meath on the east coast of Ireland. The Boyne Valley Mounds at Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth were built around 3200BC making them older than Stonehenge in England and the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Built by Neolithic farming communities about 5000 years ago, the passage tombs have clear astronomical alignments such as the Winter Solstice Sunrise at Newgrange and the Equinox Sunrise at Loughcrew. Judging from the splendour and magnificence of Newgrange and Knowth it is likely that these temples of the ancestors were places of astrological, spiritual, r Read More

The Archaeology of Ancient Ireland

The Archaeology of Ancient Ireland Prehistoric Ireland. Little remains of Irish dwellings that predates the sixth century a.d. The abundance of wood and the difficulty of working stone with primitive tools undoubtedly accounts in part for this. In addition, the primitive farming practice of depleting the fields and then moving on to new ones made the laborious erection of a permanent stone dwelling unfeasible. Moreover, livestock constituted a major part of the wealth of the time, and the pasturing of flocks required considerable mobility, since the animals lived as foragers and were not, for the most part, fed grain from the laboriously worked fields. Furthermore, there were at that time no towns or even villages where artifacts might accumulate over a considerable period of time. At the Read More
