Competition: An Innovative Cure for NASA

Competition: An Innovative Cure for NA$A OpEd published in Space News (weekly printed edition´s date: September 25th, 2000, page 20) . The Microsoft antitrust litigation, as well as the consumer benefits resulting from AT&T´s break-up, have substantially raised public awareness about the negative impact that monopolies can have on society. Many people who know much about NASA distrust it as well. Unfortunately NA$A's annual budget allocation process is consequently unpredictable. It seems NASA would benefit from having publicly funded competition, resembling what the Japanese government's previously divided civilian space agencies were like for several decades (and with a combined total of just 12% of NASA´s budget, too). Such a decentralization of power would benefit taxpayers, the privat Read More

Monopoly or competition:

Monopoly or competition: Redesigning the electric industry Indiana forum on competition considers numerous options for a restructured electric utility industry. Recently, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved a proposal to restructure the wholesale market for electricity at the national level by introducing what is called "open access" to the nationwide transmission grid. Redesign of the electric industry at the retail level in order to introduce elements of competition is also being given serious consideration in Indiana through a series of forums being conducted by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC). The first such "Forum on Competition" was held on December 20, 1994, with subsequent forums being conducted on almost a monthly basis. Re Read More

Principles of Normative Ethics

Votes:0
Normative Ethical Principles and Theories: A Brief Overview Descriptive theory explains how things are (e.g., this paper is white; most Americans eat meat; etc.), whereas normative or prescriptive theory tells us how things ought to be (people ought to be honest, etc.). Ethics is about what ought to be, not what is. We simply would not need to consider what we ought to do if we always did it as a matter of course. Since we are focusing on morality and ethics, we are concerned with what morally ought to be the case. All ethical theories use various normative ethical principles in assessing or justifying actions and behavior. To be practical and beneficial, ethical discourse must use understandings, procedures, and judgment criteria that all rational people who are concerned with morality an Read More

(Reprinted from HKCER Letters, Vol.35, November 1995) The Impact of Environmental Regulation on Employment S. Fred Singer Few will dispute the need for some kind of regulation in a complex society such as ours. When the behavior of people, or of firms, or even of governmental agencies, causes damage to others--and when the ancient system of tort law becomes too cumbersome or cannot be applied for other reasons--there arises a need for regulation imposed by government on the basis of democratic consent by the people. But like every other human activity, particularly if it is carried out by government, regulation requires a system of checks and balances. Otherwise, a new tyranny will spring up, composed of regulators whose purpose in life, whose gratification, and whose power derive from eve Read More

Rule Based Forecasting: Corrected and Simplified

The following sections contain the corrected version of the rule-base contained in Rule-Based Forecasting as proposed by Collopy and Armstrong (1992). The major changes to these rules have been as follows: Rules 32, 34, 35, 71, 74, and 75 had been incorrectly reported in the original paper by Collopy and Armstrong (1992). These have been corrected in this version. Heuristics have been developed for the detection of outliers, unusual last observations, level discontinuities, changing basic trends, unstable recent trends, and functinal form. The code and rules for these can be obtained from Monica Adya at the address: adya@umbc.edu Short Range Model: Estimating Brown's Parameters Short Range Model: Estimating Levels Short Range Model: Estimating Trends Long Range Model: Estimating Brown's Pa Read More

Say's Law and Supply Side Economics

Say's Law and Supply Side Economics How could it be possible that there should now be bought and sold in France five or six times as many commodities as in the miserable reign of Charles VI ? Jean Baptiste Say, A Treatise on Political Economy , 1803 In France, John Baptist Say has the merit of producing a very superior work on the subject of Political Economy. His arrangement is luminous, ideas clear, style perspicuous, and the whole subject brought within half the volume of [Adam] Smith's work. Add to this considerable advances in correctness and extension of principles. Thomas Jefferson, letter to Joseph Milligan, April 6, 1816 Yet the fundamemental point remains that the sustained increases in productivity of the Machine Age brought widespread benefits over time: average real wages in B Read More

Timecon - The ultimate economic solution

&nbsp TIMECON - The ultimate economic solution &nbsp Under construction Timecon (pronounced Time-econ) is an economic theory based on the abolition of the monetary system. It proposes replacing money with a system of time credits which allow consumers to purchase goods and services at will, and makes use of the extra resource that is freed up from managing money (banks, insurance companies, debt collectors, accountants, lawyers etc). The attached document is a book written by Graham Stephens explaining the theory. This site is dedicated to his memory. View full text of Timecon (189k) Any questions or suggested improvements ?
