China's First Female Archaeologist Without Zheng Zhenxiang, the tomb dating back to the Shang Dynasty (16th-11th century BC) would not have been unearthed in 1976 in the city of Anyang in central China's Henan Province. Zheng is the first female archeological research fellow of new China, which was founded in 1949, and she has spent 36 years excavating the Yin Ruins, the ancient capital of the Shang Dynasty, buried under Anyang. The occupant of the tomb uncovered in 1976 was Fu Hao, one of the queens of the Shang Dynasty, regarded as the first female general in Chinese history. With a high position, she often presided over sacrificial ceremonies and directed military actions, according to the inscriptions on the bones and tortoise shells discovered in Anyang. Jim Moore (Assoc. Prof., Anthropology Dept, UCSD) Research interests: Generally, the relationships among demography and ecology in the evolution of complex sociality. How are age and 'altruism' related? Rainfall and coalition formation? Things like that. One application of such an approach is to the study of early hominid behavioral ecology, and a lot of my current work relates to that. At right, I'm collecting hair from a chimpanzee nest in Ugalla, Tanzania (the hair yields DNA for population genetic work, and the location of nests can tell us about ape use of savanna habitats). Email: jjmoore@ucsd.edu Fall 2007 : I'm afraid I'm not accepting any new graduate students this year. Publications Things I've worked on... Selections from the Field Journal of William Duncan Strong (Honduras, 1933) William Duncan Strong (1899–1962) was one of the 20th century's preeminent anthropologists. Best known as an archaeologist, he studied at a time when the practice of anthropology placed equal emphasis on understanding the cultural and physical developments of human populations as well as the historic and prehistoric origins of human civilization. Strong conducted archaeological and ethnographic fieldwork throughout the Americas, and his field journals provide an exceptional record of his diverse training and holistic perspective. As both scientific documents and works of art, the journals capture archaeological detail as well as the social experience of international travel and cultural interaction. Strong was Read More
