Fukui Cave Fukui cave, which is located on the southern island of Kyushu, Japan (Yoshii-town, Nagasaki), is one of the sites of the Jomon Culture. The Jomon Period lasted from about 13,000 B.P.-2,300 B.P. This period can be divided into the Incipient, Initial, Early, Middle, Late, and Final Periods. The Jomon period is the beginning of the Japanese ceramic tradition, and its earthenware has been classified into more than 50 styles based on the method of surface decoration and general motifs. Oshigatamon earthenware, which was found in the first layer was already a known type of earthenware. This type of pottery is decorated with a stick that has a motif carved on it. It is a common type found in the Initial Period. Projectile points were also found in this layer. In the summer of 1960, sma Read More

Thought to be the site of Vyadhapura, the last capital of the Funan King Rudravarman in the sixth century, the Lower Mekong Archaeological Project (LOMAP), a combined effort from the University of Hawaii, the East-West Center and the Royal University of Fine Arts, is working hard to unearth evidence of much earlier occupation of the area. In and around the town of Angkor Borei, excavations are taking place in people's backyards and in orchards, while a short distance south of the town lies the hill of Phnom Da, on which the ancient Khmers built religious structures at different points in the past. During the past five decades archaeologists have excavated an abundance of artifacts at several sites throughout China. Historians have learned more than ever about the burial customs, religious practices and rituals of daily life in ancient Chinese civilizations. Masterpieces in jade, stone, ivory and bronze are among the objects discovered recently. To commemorate these archaeological finds, the U.S. National Gallery of Art has compiled a exhibition and companion catalog of photographs titled, "The Golden Age of Chinese Archaeology: Celebrated Discoveries from The People's Republic of China." The exhibition opens at the National Gallery of Art in Washington on September 19 and runs through January 2, 2000. In the following gallery, we present a sampling of images from the collection. Arikamedu, on the southeast coast of India just south of Pondicherry, is the most famous archaeological site in southern India. Discovered in the 1930s and quickly linked with Roman trade, it was excavated three times in the 1940s. The first excavation was an amateur French endeavor. R.E.M. Wheeler conducted the second and best-known campaign. J-.M. Casal conducted the third. Memory of Jomon Period

Memory of Jomon Period ?| Ken Sakamura ?| There is no question that academic materials are important to museums. Digitalization is by no means a technology that renders actual items unnecessary, and it does not confront exhibits of actual items as an alternative. Rather, the digital museum concept espouses the concept that the fusion of virtual museums comprising information with real museums comprising actual items is important to 21st century museums. For example, if a copy with more complete information about an exhibit is stored in a digital archive, this acts as a plus in terms of long-term storage of the original materials, by reducing the necessity of the original materials. In addition, by using computers to search via networks the abundant information in digital archives, it is po Read More
